We saw some great things in Trier. St Paulinas Basilica by the architect Balthasar-Neumann - amazing. In the centre there is a huge glass structure encasing Roman and medieval ruins - they starting building an underground car park and when the ruins were found had to stop - not easy building in Trier. The Roman Imperial Throne Room (Constantine), now a Protestant church. The Electoral Palace, Palace Gardens, Imperial Roman Baths, Bishops Cathedral (an incredible mix 0f Roman, Romanesque, Medieval, Renaissance. Shopping near the Porta Nigra, the black gate, the Roman symbol of Trier. Lunch at the Bitburger Wirsthaus - excellent - Bitburger beer of course, the local brew. Drove back through the Mosel Valley - must be very fit to work on the vines here on what are nearly cliffs. Very beautiful area. Stopped in Brenkastel-Kues, a fantastic town on the Mosel River. A glass of local wine in a 600 year old wein stube which is about 2 metres wide and on an angle. A great hunting shop (closed) called J Kirsten - have to google it. Dinner with Magdalena, Margareth & Gerhard back at hotel - the owner Michael is a great chef and we had to book on a Monday night. Magdelana works part time in this hotel. Schweinefilet & Hahnchenbrust (pork & chicken?) - anyway, all great with those lovely German noodles (Spatzle I think) and rosti potato.
We had the most wonderful stay in the Trier area and we cannot thank Magdalena and her mum and dad enough for looking after us and showing us around. Itis so good to meet up again with someone we have known in Australia and see their way of life in Germany - very interesting and impressive. Thank you again. We look forward to seeing you in Australia but it may be hard to top Roman ruins and the Mosel Valley and German villages in the hills.
